Learning Beyond the Classroom

British Sign Language

Children from Nursery to Year 6 have weekly lessons in British Sign Language (BSL). These lessons are taught by a specialist instructor who also educates the children about deaf awareness. We have a deaf resource centre which offers sign language lessons to parents, staff and the wider community too.

Brimsdown pupils love their BSL lessons and our older children work towards nationally recognised qualifications. Not only does sign language make the school more inclusive, it has academic benefits; improving vocabulary, fine motor skills, memory retention and self-esteem.

Ivy Parliament

Our children represent the school in the Ivy Parliament, a thriving and influential body within Ivy Learning Trust. Every year, three new representatives from each Ivy school are elected to join the Parliament, which gives children a voice in educational and social issues.

Pupils meet regularly to discuss current themes and decide on an action plan for the year. In the past they have written to MPs, visited the Houses of Parliament, appeared in the local press and successfully lobbied to ban single-use plastic bottles from all Ivy schools.

OPAL Outdoor Play

We are excited to share that Brimsdown Primary School is joining the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) program, an initiative designed to transform how our children learn, explore, and grow through outdoor play.

Other Activities

Our pupils can choose from a busy timetable of morning and after school activities, from archery to dance. Find out more about our clubs.

The school is determined to support pupils’ wider development beyond the academic. A range of trips helps to broaden pupils’ horizons. Pupils can attend several after-school clubs to develop new talents, including archery, dance and karate. There is a strong focus on developing pupils as active young citizens.
